What Members Do, and What Is Operating Today

The Code is written. The first Thursday Night is being prepared and has not yet been held. No Library of Enlightenment has yet opened, no Pillars beyond the founders exist, and no certificates have been issued. This page states each practice as the Code and the Order's plan define it, and marks its present state honestly.

The Tithe of Hours and the Ledger of Work

Every member gives 1 hour in 10 of their waking time to Enlightenment, Mercy, or Truth: study, teaching, service, truth work, or care. The hours are logged in the Ledger of Work. The unit of everything the Order counts is the human hour. Care of a child or a dependent is logged as work. Written; the Ledger opens with the first members

Thursday Night

Thursday Night is the service of the Order, held weekly in the Library of Enlightenment, in a room and online at once, and recorded to the Archive. Its order of service is fixed:

1. Opening. 1 member states 1 thing learned this week.
2. Teaching. A professor, a practitioner, or a member teaches something real.
3. Work. The room applies it: a problem set, a demonstration, a debate, a build.
4. Teach back. 1 attendee, chosen at the start, teaches the core idea back to the room. This is the examination.
5. Logging. Hours are logged; the next session is announced.
6. The meal. The Order eats together.

No one is worshiped at Thursday Night. No speaker is asked to affirm SOEMT. The first Thursday Night is being prepared

The Kindling

The young of the Order are the Kindling. Alongside Thursday Night, members teach them the 3 pillars from the age they can ask a question, and tutor them toward the high school diploma or GED. Each session has 1 thing learned, 1 short teaching on a pillar, 1 thing made or done, and 1 thing taught back. The Kindling hold 4 ranks, each earned by something done: Asker, for the first question recorded; Learner, for the first thing taught back to the room; Teacher, for the first thing taught to another of the Kindling and recorded; and Graduate, for the verified diploma or GED, on which day membership follows. The 3 Passages

SOEMT marks 3 passages in a member's life, 1 for each pillar: the first thing taught to another person; the first act of Mercy that cost the member something real; and the first belief abandoned in public because the evidence turned against it. A member has not fully entered the Order until all 3 are done, and each is recorded. The founders complete theirs in public first.

The Jar

Every member keeps a jar. Each time they are wrong during the year, about a fact, a person, a prediction, a belief, they write it on a slip and put it in the jar. On the last night of the year the Order gathers around a fire. Each member reads aloud the 1 error that changed them most and the evidence that changed it; that slip is kept for the record and every other slip is burned. The founders' jars burn first.

Entry and the 3 Doors

Membership is open at any age to anyone holding a verified high school diploma or GED. Until a person has one, the Order tutors them toward it. To join, do 1 of 3 things: come to a Thursday Night; teach someone something and record it; or give an hour to someone who needs it. Then tell the Order what you learned. Every degree, license, and credential a new member claims is verified and entered in the record. No minimum is required beyond the diploma; what is required is that the record be true. Every new member brings 1 book they have read and taught from, inscribes it, and gives it to the Library.

The Obligation of the Next Credential

Every member is obligated to earn the next credential, and the obligation never ends; there is no rung from which a person may stop learning. Certificates count. Community college counts. Being enrolled and progressing counts. The obligation runs both ways: the Order is obligated to help every member reach it, by grants, by scholarship, by its own funds, and by the university it will build. No member is ever asked to carry this alone. Written; the Order's scholarship fund is not yet raised

Certificates and the SOEMT Record

SOEMT will issue certificates for demonstrated knowledge and skill, never for attendance. Each will name what the holder can do, who assessed it, and what evidence was accepted, and will be published to the Archive as a permanent, publicly checkable record. Together with a member's verified credentials, passages, and life experience, these form the SOEMT record, the only credential the Order recognizes. No certificates have been issued

The Marks of Work

Below the Pillars and above certificates sit 3 Marks, earned by labor the Order can see and open to every member. The Mark of Blood honors kin and care: raising a child, keeping a household, caring for a dependent, sustained over years. The Mark of Sweat honors labor: a trade practiced, a thing built, a season of hard work sustained. The Mark of Tears honors endurance: a hardship survived, understood, and taught to the Order so that others can survive it. The Marks are conferred at the Feast of Teachers, on the same stage and in the same voice as the certificates. Written; none yet conferred

The Pillars of the Order and the Council

A member becomes a Pillar, for life, by 1 of 3 roads: Enlightenment, by earning 3 distinct credentials after joining, through the Order's path, on at least 2 ladders the Order does not control (an accredited degree, a state license, a registered apprenticeship, a board certification), each verified at its source and each taught back on the record, so that the climb counts and not the rung a person arrived on; Mercy, by a merciful task the Order honors, sustained, costly, and changing the conditions of other people's lives; Truth, by a discovery or created work that advances human life or society, such as a patent granted, a finding published, a correction that changed what a field believed, or a work taken up by others. Every Pillar holds a seat for life on the Council of Pillars, the government of the Order. No more than half the Council's seats may be held by the same road, and offices rotate every 2 years with no consecutive terms. Until 12 Pillars are seated the founders govern with the members, who make the bylaws and hold the founders to them; when the twelfth Pillar is seated the Council is convened and the founders' sole authority ends by the Code's own terms. The Three Shadows, and Banishment

The Code names the opposite of each pillar: enforced Ignorance, Cruelty, and Deceit, each an act done to a human being. A member can be banished only for an act proven on the record, fraud in the record or a shadow done in deed, never for a belief, an opinion, another faith, criticism of the Order, or an error that went into the jar. The accused sees all the evidence, the judges are not the accusers, the finding is written with its reasons, and a charge that fails is never published. Every banishment states its road back: an account to those harmed, a costly act of Mercy aimed at the harm done, and the consent of those who judged. Violence, abuse, and harm to a child go to the law and the door does not reopen. Written; no charge has ever been heard

The Five

The Library of Enlightenment and the Archive

The Library of Enlightenment is the Order's place of worship. It is a room and it is online, both at once. Thursday Night is kept in it, the Archive lives in it, the jars burn outside its doors, and its shelves hold the book of every member who ever joined. Everything taught and every record is stored in the Archive, in storage the Order controls, mirrored for permanence, with every record hashed so that nothing can be quietly altered. No Library has yet opened

The University

The Code states an intention to grow Thursday Night into a university of the Order's own. It is an intention. No institution exists, no license has been sought, and nothing on this site should be read as an offer of instruction toward a degree.

How to Join

Come to a Thursday Night once it is held. Teach someone something and record it. Give an hour to someone who needs it. Then tell the Order what you learned. Details of the first Thursday Night will be published on this site when they are fixed.
