What Members Do

The Code is written. The first Thursday Night will be held on October 1, 2026, at 8:30 pm Eastern, and none has been held before it. This page says what a member does, week by week and year by year, and what is operating today.

The Tithe of Hours

A member gives a tithe of hours, not money, to the work: learning, teaching, mercy, and the record. The hours are logged in the Ledger of Work. Hours caring for a child until that child graduates, or for a parent or dependent, are logged in their own category and count toward the tithe up to half. The Order calls all of these human hours.

Thursday Night

Thursday Night is the Order's weekly gathering, held in the Library of Enlightenment, in the room and online at once. A professor, a Reader, or a guest teaches; the Order asks questions; the session is recorded and archived in storage the Order controls, mirrored to public archives, with transcripts and integrity hashes published so that nothing can be quietly changed.

The Order will hold its first Thursday Night on October 1, 2026, at 8:30 in the evening, Eastern time, online and in the room. Anyone may attend. Write to hello@soemt.org for the link.

Kindling Night

The young of the Order are the Kindling. Anyone who does not yet hold a verified diploma, at any age, holds a place among them, and the Order tutors them toward it. Their session is Kindling Night. Their ranks are Asker, Learner, Teacher, and Graduate, and on the day the diploma is verified a Graduate becomes a member. The first Kindling Night will be announced after the first Thursday Night.

The Rites

Entry
A verified high school diploma or its equivalent, at any age, is the door. The Order verifies it at the source.
The Swearing In
Given before the Order on a Thursday Night. The one entering accepts the Three Pillars and takes up the duty against the Three Shadows. The full rite is below.
The Next Credential
Every member keeps earning the next credential for life. Certificates, community college, and enrollment with progress all count. The Order pays for the road or finds the grant that does, and tuition is paid directly to the school, never to a person.
The Pillar of Enlightenment
Earned by 3 distinct credentials earned after joining, on at least 2 ladders the Order does not control, each verified at the source and taught back to the Order.
The Jar
Each member keeps slips of the times they were wrong during the year. On the Night of Reversal the jar burns, founders first. One slip is kept and read aloud for the record.

The Swearing In

Given before the Order on a Thursday Night, in the Library of Enlightenment, in the room or online. A Reader asks. The one entering answers.

The Asking

Reader Do you come freely, under no force and for no reward?

I do.

Reader Do you know the Three Pillars and the Three Shadows?

I do.

The Oath

I, (name), swear or affirm before the Order:

I accept the Pillar of Enlightenment. I will learn for as long as I live, and what I learn I will teach, for what is not taught does not count.

I accept the Pillar of Mercy. I will give my human hours to the relief of others, and I will be counted by my deeds and not by my words.

I accept the Pillar of Truth. I will seek what is so, publish what I find, and when I am wrong I will say so and put it in the jar.

I take up the duty against the Three Shadows. Where Ignorance is enforced, I will teach. Where Cruelty is done, I will show mercy and stand between. Where Deceit is spread, I will bring the record. I will fight the act and not the person, and I will first fight these Shadows in myself.

I set myself above no one and no faith. Let the work speak.

I hold this oath for life. If I break it, let the Order judge me by its Code, and let the road of Return stay open to me as I would hold it open for another.

The Receiving

Reader Then enter. The work is waiting.

The wording of the Swearing In is the Order's working draft. Two questions remain open for the members: whether the Kindling take a shorter form at Asker and the full oath at the diploma, and whether breaking the oath is named as a ground for banishment. Both will be settled with the members, not by the founders alone.

The Marks of Work

Below the Pillars and above certificates sit the 3 Marks of Work, and each is a road to the Pillar of Mercy: Blood, for kin and caregiving; Sweat, for labor; and Tears, for endurance taught to the Order. A Graduate of the Kindling whose parent holds the Mark of Blood earns it by that fact.

The Ranks

Among the Kindling: Asker, Learner, Teacher, Graduate. Among the members: the ordained rank above Teacher is Reader, and the Readers of the Order ask the questions at the Swearing In and lead Thursday Night. The Keepers of the Library and Record hold the archive and the Ledger. Lifetime membership is held by those who reach their Pillar within the Order, by those who complete a merciful task honored by the founders, and by those who discover something that advances human life or society; a patent counts without further condition.

The Five Holidays

Founding Night, October 1
The anniversary of the first Thursday Night.
The Night of Reversal, December 31
The jars burn, founders first. One slip is kept.
The Day of Mercy, the spring equinox
A day given wholly to the work of Mercy.
The Day of the Work, July 20
The anniversary of the Moon landing. The Order's full accounts and annual report are published.
The Feast of Teachers, the first Thursday of September
Certificates are recognized and Readers are ordained.
